Hip Hop for Kids in Bali: What Children Really Learn

Hiphop Junior Eva Scolaro

Hip hop is often the first style kids ask for. It’s loud, it’s fun, and it looks like the moves they see on screen. But parents tend to have a few quiet questions of their own. Is it right for my child’s age? Will they actually learn something? What happens in a class?

Here’s a plain, parent-friendly guide to hip hop for kids in Sanur and Canggu.

What hip hop dance is for kids

For children, hip hop is built on rhythm, groove and self-expression. Classes usually mix a few ingredients: learning foundational moves, putting them together into short routines, and leaving room for freestyle, where each child finds their own way to move to the beat.

That last part is what makes hip hop different from many other styles. There is structure, but there’s also freedom. Children are encouraged to bring their own personality, not copy someone else’s.

What children learn in a hip hop class

Beyond the moves themselves, regular hip hop classes quietly build:

  • Rhythm and coordination. Children learn to hear a beat and match their body to it.
  • Confidence. Kids often pick up basic moves within a few lessons, and that quick feeling of “I can do this” goes a long way.
  • Self-expression. Freestyle moments give children a safe place to be silly, bold or creative.
  • Stamina and energy release. It’s an active, lively hour, great for children who have energy to spare.
  • Teamwork. Learning a routine together means listening, counting and moving in time with friends.
  • Practice habits. Improving takes a little regular practice, and children discover that small, steady effort pays off.

Which age can start hip hop?

Children can begin at different stages, and the style adapts:

Ages 3 to 5: Little ones start with playful movement, simple steps and music, more like a dance game than a lesson. The aim is to enjoy moving to the beat.

Ages 6 to 10: Many dance schools see around age six as the point where children can follow directions and work with a group in more structured lessons. They start remembering routines and building technique.

Ages 11 to 16: Teens often join for their own reasons, as a way to explore their style, burn off energy and ease school stress. Many start in their teenage years, and it’s never too late to begin.

Questions parents often ask

Is hip hop suitable for young children?

Yes, when the class is taught for their age. Music and choreography should suit the group in the room, and it’s a fair question to ask any studio how they choose both. You’re always welcome to ask ours.

Does my child need experience?

No. Most children start with none, and a good beginner class assumes exactly that.

What should my child wear?

Comfortable clothes they can move in, and sneakers that are easy to move in. Not sure about anything else? A quick WhatsApp message before the class is all it takes.

What if my child is shy?

That’s common, and it’s fine. Many children watch for part of the first class before joining in. There’s no pressure to perform on day one.

What happens in a hip hop class

Every class runs a little differently, but a typical session looks something like this:

  1. A warm-up to music, so bodies and nerves loosen up.
  2. Foundations, practising a few basic moves and grooves.
  3. A routine, where moves are put together step by step.
  4. Freestyle moments, where children try their own ideas, with plenty of laughs.
  5. A cool-down, leaving everyone proud and a little out of breath.

Hip hop, breakdance or K-Pop?

Many children who love hip hop also like its close cousins, and it helps to know the difference:

  • Hip hop focuses on grooves, rhythm and routines, with room for freestyle. Hip hop classes
  • Breakdance goes deeper into footwork, freezes and freestyle strength. Breakdance classes
  • K-Pop brings idol-style choreography, sharp moves, formations and stage presence. K-Pop classes

If your child isn’t sure which one suits them, trying more than one is a great way to find out.
